Abstract

Today, the impact of machine learning is immense and undeniable. However, while in the hype (now it's deep learning) and exploring how it can be applied to new domains, there are a few important issues around the corner in the evolution of ML that should be discussed. This talk will focus on three arguments (provocations) where today's ML is mostly 1) gullible, 2) insecure, and 3) energy-inefficient.

Short Bio

Nuno Moniz obtained his degree in Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP-IPP) in 2012 and completed his PhD in Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 2017, with a dissertation on machine learning and the prediction of rare and extreme values, awarded at the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2017. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at LIAAD-INESC TEC, where he also co-coordinates the Data Science Hub (interface with industry) and is an Invited Professor at FCUP in disciplines of programming and fraud detection.
